At least 13 people perish and 98 hurt in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the pace and management of the country's key public works projects.

The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We shall rigorously clarify the reasons behind this tragedy,” stated the national leader.

The official announced that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the former leader, whose time in office concluded the prior year. This rail line was intimately linked to his leadership's economic vision for the southern region.

Another massive train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.

Project Execution and Safety Concerns

The development of both railway systems was supervised by the army, marking a notable increase of its duties in civilian works. They were built at an accelerated rate, defying forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked persistent apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a primary political opposition demanded an urgent halt in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This halt was suggested while awaiting a thorough safety audit. The party stated that the loss of life "requires prompt explanations."

In reaction, the president maintained that the train had been operating in total adherence to all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these national projects.
